Christopher William Cvengros was for five years a very active, dedicated member of the Mariner Sea Scouts in Dana Point. His tragic death on December 15, 1996 shocked and saddened the close knit community of young people that shared with him a love of the sea and all things nautical.

His parents, Bill and Joan Cvengros, in loving memory of their son Chris have established a $10,000 college scholarship to be awarded each May to a Mariner who is graduating from high school. The scholarships will benefit those youth who like Chris have spent years as Mariner Sea Scouts pursuing a better knowledge and enjoyment of the sea as well as developing an emphasis on safety. Each scholarship will be awarded in equal installments over four years providing the awardees continue to show academic success in a major of their choice and maintain an overall grade of at least 2.5.

For all details please visit ”The CVENGROS SCHOLARSHIP 2012″ webpage under “About” in the main menu.

February 22nd at 18:30: Spring Season 2012 information meeting (for more details please see “You are invited!” here above)

February 25 – 26: 08:00 – 17:00: the American Red Cross (ARC) Wilderness and Remote First Aid (WRFA) course

On the weekend of February 25 to 26, 2012 (from 0800-1700 each day) I am offering the American Red Cross (ARC) Wilderness and Remote First Aid (WRFA) course. WRFA program is based on the BSA Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines with enhanced content to meet OSHA’s best practices for Workplace First Aid Programs. Participants must be 14 years of age and have current CPR certification from either ARC or AHA (if you are not certified now – tell me as I may schedule another opportunity for such certification soon). Please be advised that the course will conform to the ARC course requirements.

The class is essentially all day on both Saturday and Sunday February 25 & 26. If you would like to take this course, please sign-up with me by an email response by clicking here. I will also have a waiting list made, if necessary. The cost will be $80 for registered scouts and adult advisers. The fee is to cover the cost of materials, books, supplies, two lunches and snacks. Interested scouts/adults who wish to take the course are encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible as the class is limited to no more than 12 participants per ARC rules. I will also be providing participants with some additional first aid materials and supplies I think this will be helpful in addition to the WRFA required material. Please sign up ASAP. Location will be in South San Clemente. Certification is valid for a two year period.

Very briefly the class objectives are to cover: identification of delayed help emergency situations; identify causes and prevention of injuries in wilderness areas; learn proper preparation for journeys into the backcountry; learn emergency actions steps for first aid response when EMS is not readily available; basic and some more advanced first aid techniques; learn how to respond to an emotionally upset victim; learn short distance transfer and evacuation techniques; and, experience providing wilderness first aid through the means of scenarios and simulated rescues that test knowledge and skills.

Jeff Johnson

March 4th from 10:30 until 19:30: The Jeffrey Adam Memorial Regatta will be on the first Sunday of the Whale’s Festival. Save the date!

Our goal is to get as many people as possible having fun on the water in memory of Jeff!
There will be competitive sabot, laser, and 420 classes. There will also be fun/non-competitive classes for new sailors or competitors. Sabots will be available for those in need of a boat! We also are planning 4 “cheerleading” boats go out to watch the races. Everyone is welcome to come and support!!
Come to the Dana Point Yacht Club after the races for awards and more fun!
Registration will be about two weeks before the race. More information will be posted at www.facebook.com/mariners936seascouts
Please spread the word to sailors and friends of Jeff!!

“Where we go one, we go all. Pass it on.” This is our motto. We teach love of self and all those whose wakes we cross, especially those who are less fortunate. We teach that to lead is to serve. We stress that the knowledge and skills that we acquire are a sacred responsibility to be passed on to others. Your financial support makes this possible.

For over 30 years, our program has enabled young men and women to be actively involved in learning seamanship, developing leadership and acquiring valuable life skills. From initial training as a 13 year old in small boats in Dana Harbor to service as a watch officer on the 118-foot tall ship SPIRIT OF DANA POINT as a high school senior is awesome growth. Your financial support makes this possible.

Community service is an important part of Mariner life. Each year, the seniors and juniors who are Quartermaster candidates organize and supervise the younger Mariners in specialized community service projects. We are proud that sea scouts are involved in both enjoying and contributing to the marine environment as well as the community in which they live. Your financial support makes this possible.

We have approximately 50 adult volunteers who spend time with our youth bringing them the message of character and cooperation that seafaring demands. The emphasis is always on team building and its many rewards. Your support makes this possible.

Fair winds and following seas,

Jim Wehan
President

PS. Donations come mainly in the form of cash but also please contact us if you wish to donate a boat, kayak or any other marine related equipment or services.
