COED TEEN BOATING PROGRAM
in Dana Point
What did you do last weekend?
More fun than anything you are doing now!
Are you a teenager looking for adventure and excitement on the high seas with a spirited group of like-minded friends?
Welcome to our Mariner Youth Programs. Fun on the water is what we are about. We have two programs of ocean-based activities for youth, ages 12 through 18, which combine fun on the water with continuing education in maritime skills. All activities are conducted with an emphasis on safety. Mariners is a club, a school, a very special place in which all youth are welcome and in which many youth form life time friendships.
Mariner Juniors, ages 12 through 14 have two active seasons a year with instruction focused on small sailboats, canoes, kayaks and row boats. Each season, special sail days and an overnight cruise are scheduled on ocean going sailboats. This program is tailored for energetic, younger teens with lots of fun activities.
FEES AND MEMBERSHIP
The Mariner Junior Program is sponsored by the South Coast Sailing Team. Membership is open twice a year; spring season and fall season. An Information Night for the Mariner Juniors is held each season (in September for the fall season and in February for the spring season) at the Dana Point Youth and Group Facility.
The Mariner Juniors have a membership fee of $100 per youth, per season, which along with completed and signed paperwork is due by Mariner Junior meeting #1 each season. The necessary paperwork can be obtained on this web site, at the information meeting, or at the first Mariner Junior meeting. Payment of fees and submission of paperwork entitles each youth to our classes, a Mariner Junior T-shirt and a weekend cruise (optional-additional fee).
Mariners (*), ages 14 through 18, sail, race, explore and cruise year around. They are encouraged to develop their skills in vessels of all sizes. Through instruction on and off the water in vessels ranging in size from 14 feet through 118 feet. Mariners have opportunities to pursue in great depth a large variety of maritime experiences. Although knowledgeable adults serve as safety officers, instructors and advisors, every attempt is made to give the youth hands-on experiences and self-directed action. Leadership training is a major goal of the organization. Preparation for Regional Sea Scout Competitions held twice a year form the structure around which the youth apply the leadership skills that they learn in the classroom.
Whether someone is a Mariner for a year or six years, the values embraced and the skills learned have a lasting effect on each participant. Some alumni find a lifetime of pleasure on the ocean as recreational boaters. A remarkable number have found a career on the sea as professional sailors. This last spring, four former Mariners graduated from the Maritime and Coast Guard Academies. One young Mariner recently enlisted in the Coast Guard and received an initial advancement of two pay grades due to his Mariner training!
